This animation takes the viewer on a journey through Onyx's unique coffee process. In 45-seconds, we outline the major points that set Onyx apart from competitors: quality/excellence in product, transparency, and sustainability. The goal of this project was to increase awareness of Onyx to the mass consumer and drive new coffee subscriptions.
We catered this project towards a direct-to-consumer audience. Not “coffee people,” as is their usual customer. The consumers we're talking to are people who are interested in good coffee and ethical practices at whatever the cost. This audience may have no experience with ONYX yet, so we introduce them to the whole concept of their business.
Key Message: ONYX is the highest quality coffee made ethically and with sustainable practices.
Onyx already had a distinct illustration style—a hand-drawn vibe that feels at home with the artisanal brand. We ran with that by making our own illustrations in that style and making their previously made illustrations come to life. We limited the color palette to their distinct black and use mostly peach as it’s the color of the packaging for their most sought-after coffee: Geometry.
Storyboards
I’m an ideas person. I love conceptual thinking and bringing insights and ideas to a visual space. Oftentimes, my favorite part of a project is sitting down with my animators and associating imagery with the script. We often start with very rough boards (Figure 01) to get the ideas out and then hone in on the style and details in the clean board phase (Figure 02).
For the Onyx Coffee Process video, in particular, I took a tour of their roasting facility to get a full understanding of their process. This attention and care for detail are what make a project go from fine to fantastic.
