Backcountry approached my team to make a sizzle reel for their investors to get a sense of Backcountry’s culture with their new Operation Send program. The client provided us with a stack of employee photos, a script, and the visual idea of a “subtle film treatment” and we got to work.

We really leaned into this idea of a film slide show—I of course was inspired by the Mad Men episode with the Kodak Carousel. However, when a client hands me photos only, a nightmare of a typical photo slideshow flashes before my eyes. Mixing this vintage feel with a more modern execution of the animation raises the quality threshold ten-fold.

One of the most important things about motion design is to keep things moving at all times—that’s the only way you can hold anyone’s attention. When designing this piece I made sure to include multiple foreground and background elements for my animator to play with while the viewer was to be focusing on the photos and text.

Ultimately, the trifecta of awesome photography, concise/punchy scriptwriting, and thoughtful design and animation sold the stakeholders on investing in this idea.
